Veteran mollywood actress Sheela has been selected for the prestigious J C Daniel award for the year 2018. Minister for cultural affairs A K Balan made the announcement on Tuesday. J C Daniel award constituted by the state government is the highest film honour given for the artist’s life time contribution to Malayalam film industry.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, citation and plaque. She will be honoured with the award at the official film awards ceremony on July 27 at Nisagandhi auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram.
She was selected for the honour by a jury chaired by noted director K S Sethumadhavan and members actor Nedumudi Venu, script writer John Paul, Kerala state Chalachitra Academy chairman Kamal and culture department secretary Rani George.
Sheela made her debut as an actress with MGR starrer Tamil movie ‘Pasam’. Her first movie in Malayalam was ‘Bhagyajathakam’ directed by P Bhaskaran in 1962. Following the movie, she became a star in mollywood. Sheela had won the best actress award at the first state film awards. She won the state award for the movie ‘Kallichellamma’ in 1969.
‘Oru Penninte Katha’, ‘Ummachu’, ‘Akale’ and ‘Manasinakkare’ are some of her popular movies.
The actress also directed two movies namely ‘Yakshaganam’ and ‘Sikharangal’. She also penned the story for Mammootty starrer movie ‘Onnu Chirikkoo’. Proving herself as a writer, she has authored a novel ‘Kuyilinte Koodu’ and 30 short stories.
