Vismaya Mohanlal has made an impressive start to her big-screen career, with her debut film ‘Thudakkam’ reportedly emerging as the biggest worldwide opening-day grosser for a female-led Malayalam film.
Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the thriller has edged past Kalyani Priyadarshan-starrer ‘Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra’ with a stronger worldwide opening, helped particularly by its performance in overseas markets.
According to box office tracker Sacnilk, ‘Thudakkam’ collected ₹2.55 crore net in India on its opening day from 1,102 shows. The film recorded an estimated India gross of ₹2.96 crore, while its overseas collections added another ₹3.90 crore.
With these figures combined, the film’s estimated worldwide gross stood at ₹6.86 crore on Day 1, putting it ahead of ‘Lokah’, which had recorded a worldwide opening gross of ₹6.63 crore.
For moviegoers and entertainment enthusiasts across the UAE, Gold 101.3FM, UAE’s No. 1 radio station, continues to bring the latest updates from the world of cinema, music and entertainment.
‘Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra’, which stars Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role, had collected ₹2.70 crore net in India on its opening day from 1,360 shows. Its India gross stood at ₹3.13 crore, while the film earned an estimated ₹3.50 crore from overseas markets.
Interestingly, ‘Lokah’ performed better than ‘Thudakkam’ in terms of both India net and India gross collections on the first day. However, ‘Thudakkam’ gained the advantage internationally, with its overseas gross of ₹3.90 crore compared with ‘Lokah’s ₹3.50 crore. That stronger overseas performance helped the new release take the lead in worldwide opening-day collections.
The achievement is particularly significant given the anticipation surrounding Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut. The actor, who is the daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, makes her lead debut in a thriller that places her character in an intense, high-pressure situation where instinct, courage and determination become essential for survival.
Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, ‘Thudakkam’ follows a youngster played by Vismaya who is suddenly forced to summon extraordinary courage when faced with a fight-or-flight situation. Set against a tense backdrop, the film explores themes of hope, resilience and the difficult choices that can change the course of a person’s life.
The film features an ensemble cast alongside Vismaya, including Aashish Joe Antony, Mohanlal, Sai Kumar, Bobby Kurian, Manoj K Jayan, Ganesh Kumar, Aswin, Essa, Kottayam Ramesh, Jaya Kurup and Jaffar Idukki.
With its strong opening and particularly encouraging overseas performance, ‘Thudakkam’ has given Vismaya Mohanlal a notable start to her film career while setting a new benchmark for the worldwide opening of a female-led Malayalam film.
