OpenAI has introduced its new reasoning-focused AI models, including o1 and the lighter version o1-mini, expanding access to advanced problem-solving tools for users worldwide.

The o1 model is designed to handle complex tasks such as mathematics, coding, and logical reasoning. According to the company, future updates may even enable it to tackle highly specialised, PhD-level scientific questions. Alongside it, o1-mini offers a faster and more affordable alternative, particularly suited for coding and tasks that rely heavily on logical thinking rather than broad knowledge.

While full versions of o1 are available to premium users, o1-mini is now accessible to all users for free through ChatGPT. At launch, usage comes with weekly limits—around 30 messages for the preview version and 50 for o1-mini.

To use o1-mini, users can open ChatGPT on desktop, start a conversation, and select the model from the available options in the interface. On mobile, users can switch models by long-pressing a response and choosing the desired option from the menu.

However, the model does come with certain limitations. Unlike more advanced systems such as GPT-4o, the o1 series currently does not support internet browsing or image uploads. This means it can only process text-based inputs for now.

OpenAI says the new models are trained to “think” more carefully before responding, mimicking human-like reasoning by trying different approaches and learning from mistakes. This makes them particularly useful for academic and technical problem-solving, even in their early stages.

The rollout is happening gradually, so some users may receive access later than others.
