Google is expanding its artificial intelligence ambitions inside Gmail, transforming the popular email platform into a more conversational and interactive digital assistant powered by its Gemini AI technology.
During its latest developer event, Google unveiled a new feature called Gmail Live, allowing users to speak directly to Gmail using natural language voice commands and questions instead of manually searching through emails.
The feature enables users to ask conversational questions such as:
- “When is my child’s school event?”
- “What hotel did I book for Dubai next month?”
- “Do I have any unpaid bills this week?”
Gmail can then generate spoken or text-based answers by scanning relevant emails, confirmations, reservations, and documents stored within the user’s inbox.
Gmail moves further into the AI era
The update is part of Google’s wider strategy to integrate its Gemini AI models across products including Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Drive.
However, Gmail remains central to the company’s AI ecosystem because of the massive amount of personal, financial, travel, and scheduling information stored in email accounts.
Google says the new voice-driven system is designed to simplify inbox management and reduce what executives describe as “cognitive overload” caused by overwhelming volumes of emails and notifications.
AI Inbox aims to replace traditional email organisation
Gmail Live builds on Google’s earlier rollout of AI Inbox, which was introduced this year as a smarter alternative to the standard chronological inbox view.
Instead of displaying emails strictly by time, AI Inbox automatically:
- Summarises conversations
- Highlights priority tasks
- Groups related email threads
- Surfaces urgent actions such as bills, bookings, appointments, and reminders
The new Gmail Live experience functions similarly to Gemini Live, enabling back-and-forth voice interaction while automatically referencing emails and connected documents in real time.
AI assistants become the next battleground in tech
The launch also reflects a growing industry-wide race to transform AI chatbots into proactive digital assistants capable of managing personal information, completing tasks, and interacting more naturally with users.
Technology companies are increasingly moving beyond simple chatbot conversations toward AI systems that can actively organise schedules, retrieve information, automate workflows, and assist with everyday digital tasks.
According to reports, Gmail Live is expected to begin rolling out this summer for subscribers to Google AI Pro and Ultra plans on mobile devices.
Some AI Inbox features currently remain limited to premium users in the United States, though Google says broader international expansion is expected gradually over time.
