Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 Malayalam radio station, reports that while anticipation builds around upcoming iPhone releases, attention is already shifting to something far more groundbreaking—the 20th-anniversary iPhone expected in 2027.
According to fresh leaks from Chinese tipster Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple is actively testing a new solid-state button system that could completely replace traditional mechanical buttons. These advanced buttons would rely on haptic feedback and are said to function seamlessly even under challenging conditions, including when users wear gloves, have wet hands, or operate the device in extreme temperatures.
One of the most intriguing claims is the inclusion of an ultra-low energy microprocessor dedicated to these buttons. This chip would reportedly allow the buttons to remain responsive even when the phone is powered off or the battery is fully drained—an unusual and potentially game-changing feature.
The move toward solid-state controls aligns with Apple’s broader vision of a fully seamless design. The anniversary iPhone is rumored to feature a display that curves around all four edges, creating a truly borderless, uninterrupted glass appearance. Removing physical buttons would help achieve this sleek, futuristic look.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time such technology has been explored. Apple had previously planned to introduce solid-state buttons with the iPhone 15 Pro under an internal initiative known as “Project Bongo,” but the idea was scrapped late in development. Similar rumors resurfaced around the iPhone 16 Pro before being postponed again.
Beyond the button redesign, several other features are being widely discussed for the 2027 model. These include a dual-layer OLED display, under-display Face ID and front camera, under-display audio technology, and a massive 6,000mAh battery. Additional possibilities include reverse wireless charging and an upgraded Ceramic Shield for improved durability. However, it remains unclear which of these features are based on verified supply chain data versus speculation.
The device is expected to debut in fall 2027, marking 20 years since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. If these leaks prove accurate, Apple could be preparing one of its most ambitious design overhauls yet—potentially redefining what a smartphone looks and feels like.
