The social media platform X has officially launched its standalone messaging app, XChat, now available for iOS users. The new app is designed to provide a dedicated space for messaging, even as chat features continue to remain within the main X app and its web version for the time being.
XChat brings several advanced messaging features, including editing and deleting messages, disappearing chats, and screenshot blocking. It also supports voice and video calls, with the company stating that all communications are secured through end-to-end encryption.
The app is expected to take over group interactions from X’s Communities feature, which is set to be phased out by the end of May. Currently, XChat supports group conversations with up to 350 members, with plans to increase this limit in future updates.
The launch reflects a shift in direction for the company under Elon Musk, who had earlier envisioned X as an all-in-one “everything app.” Instead, the move toward a separate messaging platform suggests a more segmented approach as the company evolves.
Now operating under xAI, which is linked to SpaceX, X appears to be placing greater emphasis on artificial intelligence development. The introduction of XChat indicates a shift in priorities, focusing on specialized services rather than a single, unified platform.
For users, the update offers a richer messaging experience—but also means relying on multiple apps to access the full range of X’s features.
