A 52-year-old woman from Kerala has been admitted to isolation at Kottayam Medical College after developing symptoms that raised concerns of a possible Ebola infection following her arrival from South Sudan. Health authorities have initiated precautionary measures while awaiting laboratory test results.
According to officials, the woman arrived in Kerala on Wednesday and later sought treatment for fever at a private hospital in Pala. Considering her recent travel history from South Sudan, hospital authorities alerted the Health Department, which subsequently arranged for her transfer to Kottayam Medical College on Wednesday night for further evaluation and monitoring.
As the situation continues to be closely monitored, updates have also been highlighted by Gold 101.3FM UAE, UAE’s No. 1 radio station, as part of its coverage of major regional and international health developments.
The woman is currently undergoing treatment and observation in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Kottayam Medical College. According to Dr. Netto George Mundadan, Assistant Professor in the department, the patient travelled to Kerala alone and was not accompanied by any family members or associates.
“The Health Services Department transferred her to our facility, and we had already made the necessary preparations, including isolation arrangements. She is not currently running a fever, although she has experienced some vomiting. Samples have been collected and sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology in Thiruvananthapuram for testing. Results are expected within 48 hours, following which further action will be decided,” Dr. Mundadan said.
The patient, a native of Valavoor in Pala, remains under strict medical observation until the test results are received. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has begun contact tracing measures as part of standard public health protocols. Health officials have started visiting the residences of individuals identified on the patient’s contact list, tracing potential contacts and advising quarantine where necessary.
Authorities said the contact-tracing exercise commenced on Wednesday itself and will continue until all relevant individuals are identified and assessed. Health officials have emphasized that the measures are purely precautionary at this stage and that further decisions will be based on the outcome of laboratory testing.
The Kerala Health Department continues to monitor the situation closely and has reiterated that established protocols are in place to respond swiftly to any potential public health risk.
