Kerala is likely to experience rain or thundershowers at most places across the state until August 29, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has also issued a thunderstorm warning for Kerala until August 25, with several districts expected to receive isolated spells of heavy rainfall.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod for Monday. The alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, with 7–11 cm of rain expected within 24 hours.
For Tuesday, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam will continue to remain under a yellow alert, as rainfall activity is expected to persist in parts of the state.
Along and off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts, as well as over the Lakshadweep area, squally weather is likely to continue until August 25. Winds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in these areas during the warning period due to the possibility of rough conditions.
The forecast comes despite heavy rainfall reported across several parts of Kerala in recent days. The state, however, continues to record a significant deficit in its overall seasonal rainfall.
Between June 1 and August 23, Kerala received 1,255.5 mm of rainfall, against the normal rainfall of 1,659.4 mm, resulting in a 24% deficit for the period.
Wayanad recorded the highest rainfall deficit at 52%, followed by Idukki at 46%. Other districts with significant deficits include Kollam (32%), Thrissur (28%), Palakkad (27%), Alappuzha (25%), Ernakulam (24%) and Malappuram (21%).
On the other hand, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram recorded rainfall within the normal range during the period.

With rain and thunderstorms expected to remain active across Kerala over the coming days, residents, motorists and those living in areas vulnerable to waterlogging are advised to follow official weather updates and exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
The IMD’s latest forecast indicates that rainfall activity is likely to remain widespread in Kerala through August 29, while the immediate thunderstorm and coastal weather warnings remain in effect through August 25.
