Construction of a modern helipad at Ambalavayal in Wayanad has begun with funding from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). The facility is being developed on Agricultural University land along Police Station Road, just 200 metres from the town centre. The project includes a 30-by-30-metre helipad and an access road, designed to accommodate large helicopters, including those operated by the Indian Navy.

The helipad aims to ensure Wayanad remains accessible during disasters, facilitate faster rescue and relief operations, and provide access for VIPs and essential personnel during emergencies.

The Ambalavayal project is one of five helipads planned across Wayanad district. Two are planned for Bathery, while one each is proposed at Muneeswarankunnu in Thalapuzha and near the Banasura Sagar Dam. The helipad in Bathery is already nearing completion.

The District Administration and Ambalavayal Panchayat are jointly involved in implementing the project. Panchayat President N.C. Krishna Kumar said the work is expected to be completed by mid-November.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Wayanad’s disaster preparedness and improve emergency access to the district during critical situations.
