The Kerala Police has formed a special task force to prevent domestic violence and strengthen protection and support for survivors. Named ‘Speak Up’, the initiative will be led by Inspector General of Police Ajeetha Begum. An official order announcing the formation of the task force has been issued.

Highlighting the need for urgent intervention, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said on Thursday that 92 women had lost their lives in Kerala as a result of domestic violence over the past seven years. He also pointed out that many women remain silent and refrain from filing complaints due to fear. The ‘Speak Up’ initiative aims to prevent such abuse from recurring and encourage survivors to seek help.

The initiative will focus on preventing domestic abuse, providing survivors with legal assistance and counselling, and ensuring access to safe accommodation and livelihood support. Through these measures, the task force aims to offer comprehensive assistance to those experiencing violence at home and help them move towards safety and independence.

As part of the initiative, a dedicated control room will be established to facilitate the prompt registration of complaints and ensure timely assistance. Survivors will be able to seek help through a digital helpline, WhatsApp and a dedicated mobile application, making it easier to report abuse and access support.

A key feature of ‘Speak Up’ is its emphasis on the privacy and dignity of survivors. Moving away from conventional procedures, police intervention will prioritise confidentiality and aim to create a more supportive environment for those seeking assistance.

IG Ajeetha Begum said the initiative would provide a safe and reassuring space for people to share their grievances without fear or hesitation. She explained that survivors should feel comfortable speaking about their experiences, much as they would confide in a sister or a trusted friend.

With its focus on accessible reporting, confidential intervention and comprehensive support, ‘Speak Up’ aims to strengthen Kerala’s response to domestic violence and encourage more survivors to come forward and seek help.
