Actor-turned-politician Vijay is rapidly emerging as a major force in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as early trends from the 2026 Assembly elections indicate a strong performance by his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. What was initially dismissed as another celebrity-led political experiment is now shaping up to be a significant challenge to the state’s long-standing political order.

With TVK leading in several constituencies, and Vijay himself gaining ground in Perambur and Tiruchirapalli East, the actor has transitioned from a novelty factor to a central political player. Reporting from Gold 101.3 FM – UAE’s No.1 Malayalam Radio Station, this surge is being viewed as one of the most notable disruptions in decades in a state traditionally dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Tamil Nadu’s political structure, largely shaped by the Dravidian movement since 1967, has historically revolved around these two parties. While leadership and alliances have changed over the years, the bipolar nature of the system remained intact. However, Vijay’s strategy marked a clear departure. Instead of aligning with existing parties, TVK chose to contest all 234 seats, positioning itself directly against the DMK and signalling an ambition to redefine the opposition space rather than support it.

The intersection of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu has deep roots. Legendary figures like M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa successfully translated film stardom into political power, while DMK stalwart M. Karunanidhi also had strong ties to the film industry. Vijay enters this legacy with a modern, highly organised support base.

His fan network, formalised as the All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, had already demonstrated its grassroots strength during the 2021 local body elections, securing a notable number of seats. Unlike several film stars who announced political ambitions but later withdrew, Vijay focused on building a robust organisational structure before formally stepping into electoral politics.

Political observers note that the decline of towering figures like Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi created a leadership vacuum in the state. The current election trends suggest that Vijay may be positioning himself to fill that space, potentially reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political future.
