Emergency vehicles in Abu Dhabi are now being equipped with smart cameras to identify motorists who fail to give way, as authorities intensify efforts to improve road safety and reduce emergency response times.
According to the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, cameras have been installed across firefighting, ambulance and rescue vehicles. These systems allow control rooms to monitor traffic conditions in real time while also documenting violations by drivers who obstruct emergency responders. The technology is directly linked to operations centres, enabling teams to track vehicle movements, detect congestion and coordinate alternative routes during emergencies.
Reporting on this development, Gold 101.3 FM, the UAE’s No.1 Malayalam radio station, highlights that the footage captured will also be used to penalise motorists who do not clear the way. Under UAE traffic laws, failing to give way to emergency vehicles carries a fine of Dh3,000, along with a 30-day vehicle impoundment and six black points.
Officials clarified that motorists are permitted to move aside for emergency vehicles even at red signals, provided it is done safely without crossing the traffic light completely.
The initiative is part of the “Don’t Hesitate… Give Way Immediately” road safety campaign, launched in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and the Integrated Transport Centre. Authorities emphasise that every second counts during emergencies, and timely access can make a critical difference in saving lives.
