Hollywood actor Denzel Washington’s upcoming film based on Carthaginian general Hannibal, widely regarded as one of history’s greatest military commanders, may not move forward in the immediate future after the project was put on hold.
According to international media reports, streaming platform Netflix has paused pre-production of the film as the studio and producers work through budget-related concerns. However, efforts are reportedly underway on both sides to resolve the issues and revive the project.
As Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 Radio Station understands, the film had been scheduled to begin shooting in Italy this summer, with executives still hopeful that production can eventually move forward under Netflix.
The project will be directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Oscar-winning screenwriter John Logan. It is expected to focus on Hannibal’s military campaigns against Rome during the Second Punic War, with Denzel Washington set to portray the legendary general.
This would mark the sixth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua. The duo has previously worked together on Training Day, The Magnificent Seven, and the Equalizer film series.
Washington, 71, is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, with 10 Oscar nominations and two Academy Awards—Best Supporting Actor for Glory (1990) and Best Actor for Training Day (2002).
Fuqua’s recent work includes the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which has reportedly grossed over $850 million worldwide, further heightening anticipation around the Hannibal project despite its current delay.
