Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties on Monday to advance to the World Cup Round of 16, after a dramatic 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey. The victory sets up a clash with co-hosts Canada.
The decisive moment came when Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty, after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s spot kick, sending Morocco through after a tense shootout full of twists and missed chances.
As Gold 101.3FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station, reports, the match was marked by high drama even before penalties. Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui and Dutch substitute Justin Kluivert both missed their attempts, while Bart Verbruggen appeared to save Soufiane Rahimi’s penalty, only for the ball to slip under him and cross the line.
Further tension followed as Quinten Timber sent his effort wide, and Achraf Hakimi struck the post with a chance to win it for Morocco before Saibari ultimately held his nerve to seal qualification.
The encounter in Monterrey was a gripping contest that swung both ways. The Netherlands took the lead in the second half through Cody Gakpo, whose emotional finish came after a period of Dutch pressure. However, Morocco forced extra time with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, as Issa Diop rose to head home from close range.
Thousands of Moroccan supporters erupted at the final whistle, joined by local fans who backed the African side throughout the evening in what was the last World Cup match played in Monterrey.
Morocco had created several chances in the first half, with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen producing key saves to deny Ayoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui, while Yassine Bounou also made important stops, including a long-range effort from Micky van de Ven.
At the other end, Achraf Hakimi was a constant threat, striking the crossbar and forcing further saves as Morocco pushed forward from deep. The Netherlands, coached by Ronald Koeman, introduced Wout Weghorst, whose presence helped create the opening goal.
Gakpo’s strike carried emotional weight as he broke down in tears after scoring, days after a personal tragedy, with teammates consoling him.
The Dutch appeared in control for much of the second half, with captain Virgil van Dijk making a crucial defensive intervention to deny Saibari as Morocco pressed for an equaliser.
However, substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a precise cross late in stoppage time, allowing Diop to rise above Van Dijk and head home the equaliser that forced extra time.
The Netherlands briefly regained momentum in transition during extra time, but neither side could find a winner, taking the match to penalties.
Van Dijk later said the game plan had worked for most of the match but conceded that stoppage-time pressure shifted the momentum. “Unfortunately, we’re eliminated,” he said, acknowledging missed opportunities.
In the shootout, both sides endured misses and saves in a tense sequence before Morocco eventually held their nerve, securing a famous victory and a place in the last 16 against Canada in Houston on Saturday.
