Heavy rain and thundershowers are expected to continue across Kerala until July 4 as the southwest monsoon has regained strength over the state, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
For Monday, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod, forecasting very heavy rainfall of 12 cm to 20 cm within the next 24 hours.
The remaining districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad — are under a yellow alert, with rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm expected.
The weather agency has also announced alerts for the coming days. An orange alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on June 30, while Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under an orange alert on July 1.
Bringing you this update, Gold 101.3FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station, reports that yellow alerts have also been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram on June 30; Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad on July 1; and Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on July 2.
The IMD has further forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph at isolated places across Kerala and Lakshadweep until July 2.
Sea conditions are also expected to remain rough, with squally weather and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, likely along and off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts and over the Lakshadweep area through July 2. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these waters during this period.
Authorities have warned that heavy rain may lead to waterlogging, poor visibility and traffic disruptions, particularly in low-lying areas. Strong winds could uproot trees, damage power lines and disrupt transport and electricity supply, while standing crops nearing harvest may also be affected.
The weather agency has also cautioned about the possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly regions and lightning-related incidents. Residents have been urged to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, stay away from weak structures and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
