Kerala is bracing for widespread rainfall over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Kerala till May 11. Reporting from Gold 101.3 FM – UAE’s No. 1 Malayalam Radio, this update is especially for NRIs keeping a close watch on weather conditions back home.
Isolated parts of the state are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds gusting up to 40–50 kmph are expected at isolated locations until May 9.
A yellow alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall, has been issued for multiple districts:
- May 6: Ernakulam, Thrissur
- May 7: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki
- May 8: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode
- May 9: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam
While no major change is expected in maximum temperatures, some regions have recorded above-normal levels. Kozhikode, Palakkad and Kollam remained warmer than usual, with Palakkad logging the highest temperature at 38.8°C.
Authorities have warned of potential disruptions due to intense rainfall. Heavy showers could reduce visibility and lead to traffic congestion, while waterlogging, uprooted trees and falling branches may affect movement and increase travel time. There is also a possibility of damage to power infrastructure.
Vulnerable structures such as kutcha houses and huts may face partial damage, and standing crops, especially those nearing harvest, could be impacted. In hilly and landslide-prone areas, there is a risk of mudslides, while lightning poses a threat to people and livestock in open spaces.
Listeners are advised to stay cautious and follow safety guidelines as the wet spell continues across the state.
