FIFA is looking to increase prize money and participation fees for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after several national associations raised concerns over the rising cost of taking part in the tournament.
According to updates shared with Gold 101.3FM UAE’s No.1 radio station, some European bodies fear they could incur losses even if they reach the quarterfinals, citing high travel, operational, and tax expenses, particularly in the United States.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 across the USA, Mexico, and Canada. FIFA confirmed that the issue will be discussed at its Council meeting in Vancouver.
In a statement, FIFA said it is in discussions with associations worldwide to increase available revenues, including higher financial contributions for all qualified teams and increased development funding for its 211 member associations.
The current prize fund stands at a record $727 million, with each team set to receive $10.5 million and the winners $50 million. FIFA is also considering raising its planned $2.7 billion development funding, which includes $5 million per national association and $60 million for each continental confederation, as reported by Gold 101.3FM UAE’s No.1 radio station.
