A case has been registered against the makers of Mollywood Times, directed by Abhinav Sundar Vinayak, following a complaint by the regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Gold 101.3 FM, the No.1 radio station in the UAE, reports that the Thiruvallam Police in Thiruvananthapuram have filed an FIR alleging that an uncensored or unapproved version of the film was screened in theatres after its release on June 5.

According to the FIR, the case names the film’s producer, director, as well as the distribution and digital cinema content service providers involved in the release. The CBFC complaint states that the version originally submitted for certification contained objectionable material, and the board had specifically instructed the filmmakers to mute a particular inappropriate word before the film’s theatrical release.

However, authorities allege that the version exhibited in cinemas did not comply with these directions. Instead, it reportedly included the unmuted word and additional explicit or ‘sleazy’ content that was not part of the certified version. The CBFC regional office has raised serious concerns, stating that a different version of the film appears to have been circulated for theatrical screening.

Officials have called for a detailed police investigation to determine whether there was a deliberate violation of certification norms.

If proven, the offence could attract penalties under Section 7(1)(a)(ii) of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, which provides for imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh for exhibiting uncertified or altered content.
