The Kerala government’s Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Ernakulam District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) have officially taken custody of the newborn boy found abandoned near Forum Mall, Maradu, on June 28. The infant, now named Kiyan—an Arabic name meaning “royal” or “king”—has been shifted to a Special Adoption Agency (SAA) in Angamaly after being discharged from Ernakulam General Hospital.

CWC Chairperson Ullas Madhu said the baby is in good health after receiving treatment in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Following medical clearance, the infant was formally handed over to the CWC and DCPU, with officials assuring that all arrangements have been made for his safety and welfare.

The newborn was found abandoned near a roadside eatery close to Forum Mall in the early hours of June 28, prompting Maradu Police to rush the child to hospital. The CWC later registered a suo motu case and directed the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, while the DCPU was asked to submit a detailed report.

The investigation revealed that the man who alerted police had actually accompanied the baby’s mother and helped leave the infant at the location before ensuring the child remained safe until authorities arrived. Police said the 32-year-old mother, an Idukki native and mother of a 13-year-old child, was suffering from stage-four cancer and believed she was unable to care for the newborn. Investigators said she sought help from a former colleague to leave the baby in a place where he would be found quickly.

Considering the humanitarian circumstances and the man’s role in ensuring the infant’s safety, police have decided not to register a case against either the mother or her friend. Meanwhile, Baby Kiyan remains under official government care as authorities continue with the legal and child welfare procedures.
