Australia secured a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage after playing out a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in their final Group D match. The result was enough for the Socceroos to finish second in the group behind the United States, thanks to a superior goal difference, while Paraguay’s four-point tally also leaves them well placed to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Gold 101.3FM – UAE’s No. 1 Radio Station reports that with both teams entering the match on three points following victories over Turkey, a cautious contest unfolded as neither side wanted to risk elimination in the expanded 48-team tournament, where eight third-placed teams also advance to the knockout rounds.

Australia created the better chances in the first half, with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill denying Jackson Irvine early on before making another important save from Cristian Volpato in stoppage time. Paraguay enjoyed more possession after the break but struggled to create clear opportunities. Jordan Bos came closest for Australia in the closing minutes, while goalkeeper Patrick Beach comfortably dealt with Paraguay’s late attempt from Mauricio.

The result marks Australia’s third appearance in the World Cup knockout stage after reaching the Round of 16 in 2006 and 2022. The Socceroos will now face the second-placed team from Group G in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Arlington, Texas.

Australia coach Tony Popovic made six changes to his starting lineup, including handing 18-year-old Lucas Herrington his World Cup debut. The Colorado Rapids defender became the youngest Australian to feature in a World Cup match.

Paraguay must now wait for the remaining group results to confirm qualification. However, if they progress, midfielder Diego Gomez will miss the Round of 32 after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament.
