Director H. Vinoth has officially confirmed that ‘Jana Nayagan’, actor Vijay’s highly anticipated final film before transitioning into full-time politics, is partially adapted from the 2023 Telugu blockbuster ‘Bhagavanth Kesari’, ending months of speculation surrounding the film’s storyline.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Vinoth revealed that around 50 per cent of Jana Nayagan is inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari. He explained that the similarities are more pronounced in the film’s first half, with approximately 60 per cent of it drawing from the Telugu original, while the second half shares only around 20 per cent with the source material, featuring significant changes and new elements.

Vinoth admitted that he was initially hesitant to direct a remake, as he generally prefers working on original scripts. However, he said his perspective changed after Vijay, who had watched and thoroughly enjoyed Bhagavanth Kesari, encouraged him to revisit the idea.
The director said one of the biggest creative challenges was adapting a character originally portrayed by Telugu superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna into a version that would suit Vijay’s screen image and connect with Tamil audiences.
Vinoth also revealed that one of the reasons he accepted the project was his admiration for Vijay’s willingness to headline stories centred on women’s empowerment. Drawing a comparison with his earlier collaboration with Ajith Kumar in Nerkonda Paarvai—the Tamil remake of the Hindi film Pink—Vinoth said both actors shared a strong belief in supporting socially relevant stories with powerful female-centric themes.
He added that directing Jana Nayagan was an opportunity he simply did not want to miss, especially since it has been announced as Vijay’s final film before entering full-time politics.
Rumours linking Jana Nayagan to Bhagavanth Kesari first surfaced in January 2025, when actor VTV Ganesh claimed that Vijay had watched the Telugu film five times, loved its story, and was interested in remaking it. However, Bhagavanth Kesari director Anil Ravipudi consistently declined to confirm the reports before the film’s release, despite acknowledging that he had met Vijay.
With Vinoth’s latest comments, the long-running speculation has now been officially put to rest.
Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol, alongside Vijay. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on July 23 and marks the actor’s final appearance on the big screen before dedicating himself to his political career.
The original ‘Bhagavanth Kesari’, directed by Anil Ravipudi, starred Nandamuri Balakrishna, Sreeleela, Kajal Aggarwal, and Arjun Rampal in pivotal roles and emerged as one of the major Telugu box office successes of 2023.
