For Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, the wait has finally ended. More than a decade after making her mark in Malayalam cinema, the singer has won her maiden National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer at the 72nd National Film Awards for her soulful rendition of the lullaby ‘Angu Vaana Konilile’ from A.R.M.
Feature Film Jury chairperson Jayaraj noted that Vijayalakshmi’s category featured several leading voices, including Shreya Ghoshal, making the achievement even more special.

Vijayalakshmi said the award arrived at the right time, recalling the famous line from Nadodikkattu — “Everything has its own time.” She revealed that the A.R.M. team remained confident about the song’s chances even after it missed recognition at the Kerala State Film Awards.
The singer said she felt a special connection with the lullaby from the day she recorded it, believing its unique emotion would connect with listeners. The honour marks another milestone in a journey that began with Celluloid, where her song Katte Katte earned her early recognition.
Over the years, Vijayalakshmi has created a distinct identity in Malayalam music with memorable songs including Parudaya Mariyame, Kaikottum Kandittilla and Ottaykku Paadunna, for which she won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Introduced to film music by director Kamal and composer M. Jayachandran, she has now added a National Award to her remarkable musical journey.
