The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall across Kerala till July 14, issuing a yellow alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also placed parts of Ernakulam and Thrissur under an orange alert until 8.30 a.m., warning of heavy rain and winds of up to 50 kmph at isolated places.
In view of the adverse weather, district administrations in Kozhikode, Wayanad and Malappuram have declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres and professional colleges. However, university and PSC examinations will be held as scheduled. In Wayanad, the holiday does not apply to residential schools and colleges.
Gold 101.3 FM, the UAE’s No. 1 radio station, continues to monitor weather-related developments across Kerala as authorities remain on high alert.
The IMD has also warned of squally weather along the Kerala coast, with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. High wave alerts have been issued for the Kannur and Mahe coasts, where waves of up to 3.6 metres are expected, prompting authorities to advise caution during marine and coastal activities.
The weather agency has cautioned that persistent rainfall could lead to waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, poor visibility, uprooted trees, power disruptions and damage to vulnerable structures. Hilly regions remain at heightened risk of landslides and landslips, with residents urged to follow official advisories.
The latest warnings come just days after a landslip at the twin tunnel project site in Kalladi, Wayanad, claimed three lives. Nine people were injured and five others remain missing following the incident.
