Actor Madhoo, forever remembered by many for her iconic role in Roja, says her latest film Chinna Chinna Aasai marked a deeply personal journey and “a return to acting” rather than simply a comeback to Malayalam cinema.

Directed by debutant Varsha Vasudev, the film stars Madhoo as Leela, a quiet Tamil-speaking woman who gets separated from her tour group in Varanasi and gradually forms a heartfelt bond with Madhavan Maashu, played by Indrans. The film explores companionship through subtle emotions, shared silences and simple conversations.

Madhoo revealed that she had initially turned down the film because of scheduling conflicts, but Varsha Vasudev refused to cast anyone else, having written the character specifically for her. “I genuinely feel Varsha came into my life for a reason,” she said, praising the director’s conviction and vision.

The actor said playing Leela required her to let go of glamour and focus entirely on authenticity. “I stopped worrying about how I looked. I just wanted to live honestly as Leela,” she said, adding that not knowing Malayalam actually helped because the character is a Tamil-speaking woman.

Madhoo also spoke fondly of filming in Varanasi, describing the month she spent there as one of the happiest periods of her life. She enjoyed the city’s simple lifestyle, from eating at local eateries and drinking roadside chai to spending evenings by the Ganges.

She praised Varsha Vasudev’s confidence as a first-time filmmaker and said the film reminded her why she became an actor. According to Madhoo, the overwhelming audience response to Leela has made Chinna Chinna Aasai one of the most fulfilling experiences of her career.
