The Kottarakkara Police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the driver of the tipper lorry that overturned onto a crowded bus stop at Mukkonimukku in Neduvathoor early Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to several others.
The deceased were identified as Parthipan (15), a Class 10 student, Harilal (54), an insurance agent, and Ajayakumar (50), a KSRTC mechanic. All three were residents of Neeleswaram and were among those waiting at the bus stop when the tragedy occurred.
The accused driver, Nisar (40), a native of Chavara, sustained multiple injuries in the accident and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital under police surveillance. Officials said further legal action will be initiated based on medical assessments and the progress of the investigation.
In a significant development, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) suspended three officials for allegedly issuing a fitness certificate to the lorry despite existing defects in the vehicle. Those suspended include Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Sudhin Gopi, Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector (AMVI) Sharat S Kumar, and the Karunagappally Sub Regional Transport Officer (Sub RTO). Departmental disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against them.
According to local residents and preliminary investigations, the tipper lorry was travelling at a high speed when the driver allegedly swerved to avoid a motorcycle. The vehicle then lost control, crashed into a compound wall, and ploughed into people waiting at the bus stop. Around 12 people, including students and office-goers, were present at the location at the time of the accident.
Eyewitnesses said several people managed to escape moments before impact after noticing the lorry veering uncontrollably towards the bus shelter. However, many others were trapped under debris, sand, and parts of the collapsed structure.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched immediately, involving local residents, police personnel, and Fire and Rescue Services teams from Kottarakkara and Kundara. Rescue workers worked tirelessly to pull victims from beneath the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to hospital, while the third died during treatment despite efforts to save his life. Several injured persons continue to receive medical care.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over road safety standards and the effectiveness of vehicle fitness inspections. The suspension of the MVD officials has further intensified scrutiny over possible lapses in the certification process and accountability within the transport department.
The tragic accident has sent shockwaves across Kerala, with demands growing for stricter enforcement of safety regulations for heavy vehicles operating on public roads. The investigation is ongoing.
