Amid recurring fireworks-related accidents at temple festivals, the Cochin Devaswom Board is exploring a shift from traditional loud fireworks to modern, visually focused alternatives that emphasise colour effects and reduced sound intensity.
The proposal was discussed at a consultative meeting held on Monday with representatives of various temple advisory committees, where initial feedback was sought before moving toward a final decision.
Cochin Devaswom Board President K. Ravindran said the move is being considered in view of recent fireworks-related accidents reported from different parts of Kerala. He noted that the plan includes introducing modern fireworks systems in nearly 400 temples under the Board’s management.
The Board is also expected to hold discussions with the Thrissur District Collector later this week to further evaluate the proposal. A final decision will be taken only after these consultations are completed.

The initiative comes in the wake of a recent explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode, where pyrotechnic materials were being prepared for displays organised by Thiruvambady Devaswom as part of Thrissur Pooram. The incident has once again raised concerns over safety standards in the manufacture, storage and handling of fireworks used during temple festivals.
