Fans attending World Cup matches in the United States and Canada will be allowed to bring one factory-sealed disposable water bottle into stadiums, FIFA confirmed on Friday, revising its earlier restrictions on bottled items.
According to the updated guidelines, supporters may carry a soft plastic bottle of up to 20 ounces (590 ml) into venues. However, FIFA has reiterated that hard-sided containers and reusable bottles will remain prohibited on safety and security grounds.
FIFA Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi said the restrictions are part of broader stadium security measures, noting that bottles and similar items could pose a risk if thrown inside venues.
As Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 Radio Station understands, the clarification follows an earlier update to the Stadium Code of Conduct, which had initially allowed empty, transparent reusable plastic bottles, a move that was later reversed.
The change had raised concerns among fans about hydration during matches, especially as several host cities are expected to experience temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.
FIFA has said host cities will implement heat-mitigation measures around stadiums, including hydration stations, misting areas and cooling tents. It also confirmed that water prices inside venues will remain aligned with those outside stadiums.
The World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday with Mexico facing South Africa at the Azteca Stadium, marking the start of the tournament across the United States and Canada.
