Following days of speculation, K. Annamalai has officially ended his association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the party accepted his resignation from primary membership, marking a significant political development in Tamil Nadu.
According to information available with Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station, the former IPS officer is expected to address a press conference later in the day, where he is likely to outline his future political plans.
Annamalai, who joined the BJP in 2020 after resigning from the IPS, quickly rose to prominence and was appointed Tamil Nadu BJP president in 2021. Known for his aggressive campaigning style and strong grassroots connect, he earned a loyal support base and was popularly referred to as “Singham” by supporters.
During his tenure, he played a key role in expanding the party’s presence in Tamil Nadu and helped improve its vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, though without winning seats. His leadership period also saw a fluctuating relationship between the BJP and AIADMK, including a split and later reunion ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Sources indicate that Annamalai had recently met senior BJP leaders in New Delhi, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and was reportedly persuaded to reconsider his decision before stepping away from the party.
After being replaced as state BJP chief by Nainar Nagendran and maintaining a low profile in recent months, speculation about his political future had intensified.
With his exit now confirmed, attention now turns to his next move—whether he will float a new political outfit, join another party, or pursue an independent political path.
