The critically acclaimed Bollywood classic ‘Lagaan’ is all set to return to theatres as it celebrates 25 years since its original release on June 15, 2001. Starring Aamir Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the period sports drama remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films.
Set during British colonial rule, ‘Lagaan’ tells the inspiring story of a group of untrained villagers who challenge their British rulers to a high-stakes cricket match in a bid to escape oppressive taxes. The film went on to achieve international recognition, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.
According to an announcement by Aamir Khan Productions, the film will be re-released in theatres on June 12, with special screenings scheduled for June 12, 13 and 14. Sharing the news on Instagram, the production house described ‘Lagaan’ as “a timeless epic that touched every heart” and invited audiences to relive its magic on the big screen.
As Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station, understands, the re-release is expected to bring a wave of nostalgia for movie lovers who experienced the film during its original theatrical run, while also introducing the cinematic classic to a new generation of viewers.
The film features an ensemble cast including Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rajendra Gupta alongside Aamir Khan. Its memorable soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, includes iconic songs such as ‘Ghanan Ghanan’, ‘Mitwa’, ‘Radha Kaise Na Jale’ and ‘O Rey Chhori’, which continue to enjoy immense popularity even today.
Beyond its box office success, ‘Lagaan’ was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, winning eight awards, including the Best Popular Film award at the 49th National Film Awards. Twenty-five years later, the film continues to be regarded as a landmark achievement in Indian cinema and a defining chapter in Aamir Khan’s career.
