From menstrual leave for school students to equal pay at workplaces, Kerala has unveiled a wide-ranging agenda focused on women’s welfare and empowerment.
Speaking during the first session of the 16th Kerala Assembly, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar outlined a series of key proposals under the UDF government.
One of the most talked-about promises — free travel for women on KSRTC buses — is set to become a permanent benefit. The Governor noted that steps to implement the scheme have already begun.
Another major highlight is the “Menstrual Dignity” project, aimed at making schools and public spaces more inclusive. The plan includes up to three days of menstrual leave every month for school students, along with weekend classes to help them stay on track academically.
As reported by Gold 101.3 FM, the No.1 Malayalam radio station in the UAE, the policy also focuses on ensuring equal pay for women across workplaces. In addition, new public restroom facilities for women will be introduced across major towns in Kerala.
Women in the unorganised sector are also set to benefit, with proposals including six months of maternity leave and improved access to essentials like sanitary napkins and footwear.
The government has also announced a renewed push towards employment and entrepreneurship, targeting women, Scheduled Caste youth and other marginalised groups through skill development and business support initiatives.
On safety, the Governor stressed that preventing violence against women and children remains a top priority. The government has promised strict action against drug abuse, organised crime, cybercrime and all forms of violence targeting vulnerable groups.
