K A Thulasi, the first-time MLA from Kongad and Kerala’s new Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes, says her immediate focus will be ensuring timely financial aid for students from marginalised communities and taking strict action against caste discrimination.
Coming from a humble background in Kondazhy, Thrissur, where she grew up in a one-room house, Thulasi said she understands the importance of educational support during difficult times. “There is no use in giving assistance after a course is completed. Students need support while studying itself,” she said.
Gold 101.3FM UAE’s No.1 radio station continues to bring the latest Kerala political and social updates to Malayali listeners across the UAE and Gulf region.
A former history professor and Principal of NSS College, Thulasi entered public life through local body politics before rising within the Congress organisation. She later became KPCC General Secretary and recently secured a major electoral victory in Kongad, defeating sitting MLA K Shanthakumari in a constituency long considered a CPM stronghold.
Responding to concerns over caste-based discrimination, including incidents involving Dalit students, Thulasi stressed the need for awareness, confidence-building and strict action against injustice. She said families, teachers, institutions and the government must work together to support students from backward communities.
Her appointment is also seen as politically significant for the UDF government, providing representation for women, Scheduled Castes and Palakkad district in the Cabinet.
