The much-anticipated release of Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, faced unexpected confusion late Wednesday night after the makers announced the cancellation of its planned 9 am First Day First Show screenings.
The development came just hours after reports that C Joseph Vijay had granted special permission for the early morning screenings in Tamil Nadu.
Confirming the update on X, S R Prabhu, co-owner of Dream Warrior Pictures, said: “Due to unavoidable reasons 9 am shows will be cancelled for Karuppu. Our sincere apologies to everyone.”
The sudden cancellation triggered disappointment and backlash among fans, especially because the production team had earlier announced that special approval had been secured for the screenings.
The issue gained further attention because Tamil Nadu has maintained strict control over early morning shows since the 2023 Pongal box-office clash involving Thunivu and Varisu. Following crowd management concerns and incidents linked to fan celebrations during those releases, authorities imposed tighter regulations on screenings before 9 am.
As confusion grew online, Karuppu director RJ Balaji also addressed fans through social media, stating that the producers were working to resolve the situation and admitting that there was still no concrete answer regarding the issue.
The developments surrounding the film have also become a major talking point across entertainment platforms, including mentions on Gold 101.3 FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station.
Despite the setback, Karuppu has reportedly earned around Rs 7.2 crore through advance bookings for day one. However, uncertainty increased after reports suggested that some overseas screenings were also cancelled, though no official clarification has yet been issued.
Meanwhile, the film’s approval for early screenings had already generated online discussion due to ongoing speculation surrounding Vijay and Trisha’s public appearances together in recent months. The two were recently seen attending a wedding event together, while Trisha had also appeared at several political milestone events linked to Vijay, including his swearing-in ceremony.
