Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that 3 Idiots 2 is in development, marking the return of one of India’s most successful and widely searched film franchises, as reported by Gold 101.3 FM – UAE’s No. 1 Malayalam Radio Station.

Director Rajkumar Hirani is currently working on the script, with the sequel expected to revisit the iconic characters years after the timeline of the original film. Speaking in an interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir Khan said he has already heard the narration of the sequel and was impressed with the storyline, though he added that the script is still in the development stage.

“It has the same humour and an unusual story. It tells the story of the same ‘three idiots,’ but set 10 years later. This is one of the films I will be working on soon. I think it’s a beautiful story, and Abhijat (Abhijat Joshi) and Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) have written it very well. So I am also waiting to do that and turn Phunsukh Wangdu once again,” Khan said.

The actor also confirmed that he is expected to reprise his role in the upcoming film, which reunites the celebrated creative team of Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi, known for delivering some of Bollywood’s biggest hits.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots went on to become a cultural phenomenon in Indian cinema, starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Mona Singh. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film was both a critical and commercial blockbuster, reportedly grossing over ₹400 crore worldwide and more than ₹200 crore in India net collections, making it one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.

The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and continues to remain one of the most searched Hindi films globally, especially among comedy-drama audiences.

With 3 Idiots 2 now officially in development, expectations are high for the return of the beloved characters and the film’s signature blend of humour, emotion, and social commentary, though no production timeline or release date has been announced yet.
