Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has officially approved a Dh500 million ($136 million) masterplan to redevelop Umm Suqeim Beach. The project aims to turn the 3.1-kilometre stretch—located between the Burj Al Arab and Kite Beach—into one of the world’s most advanced and sustainable urban beach destinations. Spanning approximately 445,000 square metres, the makeover will increase the total beach area by 30%, adding more space for leisure, sports, and cultural activities.

The redevelopment is packed with high-tech and “iconic” features designed to accommodate up to 6 million visitors annually. A standout addition is a 38-metre observation tower inspired by Dubai’s maritime heritage, which will serve as a new visual landmark for the city. To cater to the region’s outdoor lifestyle, 130,000 square metres of the beachfront will be fitted with smart lighting systems, officially enabling night swimming and 24/7 beach access.

Beyond aesthetics, the project prioritizes infrastructure and climate resilience. To combat rising sea levels, engineers will construct a 2-kilometre retaining wall and elevate the beach levels. Commuters and residents will also see significant relief as parking capacity is set to increase by 200% (up to 2,400 spaces), alongside the creation of 10 mobility hubs and 11 taxi drop-off points. The project aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, emphasizing a “human-centric” approach with dedicated facilities for seniors and people of determination.
