England captain Harry Kane claimed football’s most prestigious individual honour on Monday night, winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or after an extraordinary season for Bayern Munich and his national team.
The 33-year-old beat Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal to the award after scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country during the 2025/26 campaign. Kane becomes the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane scored 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich, finishing 19 ahead of any other player at a club in Europe’s top five leagues. It was the most prolific season of his club career, surpassing his previous best of 44 goals during his debut campaign in Germany in 2023/24.
Even excluding his 17 penalty goals, Kane’s tally of 44 non-penalty goals exceeded the total scored by any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Kane’s dominance extended to the Bundesliga, where he finished as the competition’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season. He became only the second player in Bundesliga history to win the Golden Boot in three successive campaigns, following Robert Lewandowski.
His 36 league goals ranked as the third-highest individual tally in a single Bundesliga season, behind Lewandowski’s record of 41 in 2020/21 and Gerd Muller’s 40 in 1971/72.
On the European stage, Kane scored 14 goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals. It was his highest goal return in a single campaign in the competition, leaving him just one goal behind Mbappe in the scoring charts.
He also recorded five hat-tricks across all competitions for Bayern, more than any other player at a club in Europe’s top five leagues.
Kane’s international performances further strengthened his claim to the award. He scored 12 goals for England during the Ballon d’Or assessment period, including six at the 2026 World Cup.
During the tournament, he overtook Gary Lineker to become England’s outright leading scorer in World Cup history, taking his tally to 14 goals. He also became the first England men’s player to score at five different major international tournaments.
At club level, Kane’s goals helped Bayern secure a domestic treble. The German side won the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, retained the Bundesliga title and added the DFB-Pokal to their collection.
Although Bayern’s Champions League campaign ended in the semi-finals, their domestic success, combined with Kane’s prolific scoring and England’s World Cup campaign, added weight to his Ballon d’Or credentials.
After years of outstanding individual performances without securing the biggest team honours, Kane has now combined prolific goalscoring with major silverware and football’s most coveted individual recognition.
