The flood situation in Assam has turned critical once again, with overnight rainfall raising fears of fresh inundation in several low-lying areas even as the state’s flood-related death toll rose to 89. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1.22 lakh people remain affected across five districts as of Wednesday.
Gold 101.3FM, UAE’s No.1 radio station, has learned that the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat district continues to flow in a severe flood situation. The ASDMA has urged residents to stay away from the river as water levels continue to rise, warning that further rainfall could worsen the situation.
The latest ASDMA flood bulletin reported two more deaths in the past 24 hours—one each in Sivasagar and Golaghat districts—taking this year’s flood-related death toll to 89. Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 60,000 people impacted, followed by Charaideo with over 31,000 affected and Jorhat with nearly 20,000.
Authorities are currently operating 55 relief camps and relief distribution centres across four districts, providing shelter to 17,857 displaced residents. Medical teams, veterinary personnel and other emergency agencies continue relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The floods have submerged more than 15,342 hectares of agricultural land and affected over 26,500 domestic animals and poultry. The ASDMA said the deluge has also caused extensive damage to embankments, roads, houses, schools and other public infrastructure across several parts of the state, with authorities closely monitoring the situation as rainfall continues.
