The iconic blue jersey, long associated with Indian sports teams across cricket, football, and hockey, is set to make way for a new colour in Indian hockey. Hockey India has announced that the national men’s hockey team will wear saffron jerseys at the upcoming FIH World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, scheduled from August 15 to 30.
The decision to move away from the traditional blue has triggered discussions across the sporting community, with Hockey India citing both technical requirements and symbolic significance behind the change.

According to Hockey India, the primary reason for introducing a new jersey colour is linked to visibility issues on modern hockey surfaces. International hockey pitches are now predominantly blue, and the federation said the Indian team’s blue playing kit often blended with the playing surface, affecting clarity and visibility during matches.
“It was observed that the blue playing uniform tended to blend/merge with the blue synthetic playing surface, which is now the standard colour of international hockey pitches. This visual similarity affected on-field clarity and visibility for the players,” Hockey India said in a statement.
The federation added that the suggestion for a new colour came from within the team, with players and coaches discussing possible alternatives. Options such as yellow and saffron were considered before saffron was finalised as the new colour for the national team’s playing kit.
However, Hockey India also acknowledged the cultural and national symbolism attached to the colour. The federation said saffron, being one of the colours of India’s National Flag, represents courage, sacrifice, and national pride, adding that the new jersey serves both a functional and symbolic purpose.
The change has also faced criticism from former Indian hockey greats who believe the blue jersey represents decades of history and identity.
Former India captain and coach V. Baskaran criticised the decision, saying the traditional colour was an important part of Indian hockey’s legacy. He questioned whether the move had been discussed with Hockey India’s executive board and said changing the jersey affected the team’s identity.
India’s 1975 World Cup-winning captain Ajit Pal Singh also expressed surprise over the decision. He pointed out that Indian hockey teams had worn blue since 1928 and recalled that wearing the blue jersey was a dream for generations of players aspiring to represent the country.
The jersey change has also drawn political reactions. Wayanad MP and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi criticised the move, alleging that national symbols were being reshaped for political reasons. She linked the decision to broader debates over changes in national identity and institutions.
Hockey India, however, has defended the decision and stated that changes in jersey colours have occurred previously based on practical needs and other requirements.
“Changes in jersey colour are not unprecedented in Indian hockey. From time to time, the national team’s playing kit colour has been modified as per functional and other requirements,” the federation said.
As the Indian team prepares for the FIH World Cup, the saffron jersey will mark a new visual identity for the side while also carrying forward a long sporting tradition. The move is expected to remain a topic of discussion among fans, former players, and sports observers as the team steps onto the international stage in its new colours.
